Black and red paint - deeply carved. Spirit of the forest - son of Wisnu, who gave him supernatural powers to protect. In Bali, placed outside gates and doors to keep out evil spirits. Matches C-B-14
Balinese carving of heroes and deities are renewed as money becomes available to the family or the banjar ( community organization ) or if the family or banjar needs money. New carvings ( often by less skilled craftsmen ) will be put in the temple when it is possible.
Most of these carving were commissioned originally and so are unique. Sometimes several are ordered at one time during prosperity and pairs are especially rare and appealing . Finding these carving for sale is occasional and finding them in good condition is a further blessing . All have a presence that will enhance any room.
