“Buna” weaving technique.
Buna is the word in Dawan dialect to describe a discontinuous supplementary weft
Weaving technique. What this means is that short pieces of thread are added while weaving to add a motif to a textile. The time is extraordinary as the ends of each piece must be tucked in so as to be invisible.
Very ornate textiles can be found in Central Wes Timor of the technique.
JULIANA KASA SARONG
Juliana Kasa married into the village of Sambet in Central West Timor. All women at that time had to know how to weave before they could marry. In spite of her knowledge, her new in – laws ridiculed her skills. So she decided to weave a knock-out piece.
Beginning in Jan 1936, she began the process of spinning cotton, then the weaving process began. She finished in Oct 1940, having put in 4 to 6 hours almost every day. Figuring at 4 hours a day that is more than 7000 hours !!!!! Soon after finishing the Japanese invaded Timor and her husband disappeared. Left with 3 small children, she felt defenseless and so hid this marvel in a basket and tied it near the top of her house where the smoke from the fire soon hid it from sight.
It remained there, hidden from jealous relatives for more that 20 years. She had told her relatives that her husband had taken it to sell it when he disappeared. When her sons were grown and she felt they could protect her and this sarong, she brought it down and finally she could wear it.
In the mid 1990’s, she was old and ill and needed money, she sold it to a dealer in textiles in West Timor. His wife was so taken with it’s beauty, she kept it until money was needed for her daughter’s school and I was lucky enough to come at the right time.
