East Timor (Oecussi) - Oecussi in an enclave of East Timor totally surrounded by West Timor. It owes its existence as part of East Timor to Portugese settlers in the 1500's. Now it is the poorest area in the world based on income. But there is a wonderful market called Pasar Tono in Oecussi. It is carried out under a huge banyan tree at the junction of two rivers that run only in the rain season. Totally rural but great fun and home to some very special ikat. It's a real struggle to get there, crossing the border then usually on the back of a motorbike on horrible roads for 25 kilometers. |
