| Java Art - Java is a large, densely populated island full of very interesting culture and art. Central Java is the area in which we do a lot of shopping. Yogyakarta and Solo, the old centers of culture in Java are here, only 1.1/2 hours apart.
The height of refined batik is here along with, Kratons (Palaces) great art work and wonderful music. In these two cities, we seek out masks, batik cap (stamps), hand drawn batik, old carvings, furniture and puppets. Musical instruments, mostly gamelan, are also to be found in the many shops and in the markets.
Most of our shopping is done by roaming, with little on the shopping list, so what we encounter is what we get. Its very difficult to fill a specific order so we just get the well done art and bring it back.
So after spending several days in Yogya and Solo , we will usually make a car trip up to Cirebon on the north coast in search of the unique "Megamendung" batik and maybe some masks. Then east to Semarang for a couple of antique shops (classics where you scrounge through piles of stuff) and seafood. Then back to Yogya for the gamelan festival!!! |
