| Puppets - Here is the area in which my admiration of Javanese craftsmen goes wild, especially the rod puppets (wayang golek). Some of these carvers can put such incredible expressions on puppets' faces. Our collection is well above 100 different puppets. Some are only a couple of years old but there is a group from the late 1940's and another group from well back in the 1800's. Many have been repaired, repainted or redressed with the wear and tear of use but this in no way diminishes their attraction.
The shadow puppets (wayang kulit) are wonderfully made two-dimensional figures, cut from leather and fastened to a buffalo horn stick. Only the arms are moveable separately from the body, but the intricate carving and painting are indeed wonderful. |
