| Sumba Art - Sumba is an island long renowned for the unique motifs used in the ikat. Life forms of humans and many different animals are utilized in designs not just for wear but for elaborate funeral ceremonies. The funeral of an important raja can include several hundred hinggis (blankets) offered by many different weavers. Looting of old burials has become a problem as the market value of old ikats has become enormous.
Another textile of note from Sumba is the lau hada or womens sarong. These are made in a tube and worn as a dress or skirt. Wonderful decorations are done with beads and/or shells. The special ones done for ceremonies are rare but fascinating. |
