West Timor - West Timor is the most fabulous place for textiles. Ikat (or tais) is everywhere you go. There are many villages that utilize a certain special motif in their weaving so that origin of many pieces can be recognized by their design. Both factory produced thread and handspun cotton is used extensively. And both chemical and natural dyes are used.
Shopping in West Timor is an exercise in manipulating a schedule based on market days and hours between towns or village. The central part of West Timor has a lot of fantastic and scenic markets and good ikat must be searched out. So sometimes its hectic, but its always fun. |
